There’s no doubt up until a year ago I had an intimate relationship with coffee. As in I’d polish off an entire pot of coffee by myself before 9am. Yikes! Before you get all judgey on me, you have to know I wasn’t sleeping well, have always been prone to feeling anxious, and run around 24/7 on what seems like fumes. Caffeine seemed like the logical solution to my low energy problems.
Inspite of my nutrition knowledge and propensity for striving for optimal health, I truly didn’t connect the dots between stress, anxiety, and caffeine. Go figure!
I didn’t put the pieces of the puzzle together until I broke up with my daily coffee habit. I’ll be the first to admit this decision isn’t for everyone. Believe me, it was a hard one for me to make. I may or may not have grieved heavily for a week before going cold turkey. If you have a deep, intimate relationship with coffee like I did, then you know exactly what I’m talking about here!
A few months ago I decided on a whim to treat myself to a homemade, hot drink that I could savor early in the morning while everyone else was snuggled in their bed. For me that was part of the enjoyment of coffee, aside from the boost of energy. I experimented with throwing some ingredients together and came up with a delicious concoction that satisfied my craving for that coffee experience I once enjoyed. This recipe will have you feeling energized without the jitters and eventual crash that comes with coffee.
You’ll get the benefits of some serious antioxidant heavy hitters, along with a gentle boost of energy that will leave you feeling alert and refreshed with this recipe. Let me break down some of the ingredients for you.
Matcha is stone ground green tea leaves. It comes as a powder and is a beautiful green color. It has as many antioxidants as 10 cups of green tea making it an antioxidant powerhouse. Matcha gives you a slight energy boost without the crash. It enhances your mood and can help with concentration, anxiety and depression. Good stuff, huh?
Raw cacao is another antioxidant powerhouse. It has 40 times the antioxidants of blueberries to be exact! Raw cacoa is not to be confused with cocoa powder. Cocoa powder is highly processed and doesn’t provide any nutritional value. Raw cacoa is full of iron and magnesium, two nutrients many women aren’t getting nearly enough of. It’s a natural mood elevator and can help feelings of depression and anxiety decrease. Not to mention, it tastes like chocolate! Not much to not love about all that now, is there?
Maca is a magical herb that can help stabilize your hormones. It’s been proven to help women sleep better, feel less depressed and anxious, improve memory and concentration. Maca has a bit of an earthy flavor and is very tasty when combined with cacoa powder.
Whether breaking up with coffee is right for you or not, this drink is still worth giving a shot. Head on over to my Facebook group and let’s discuss caffeine, stress, and sleep.
